Eric Funk
Board President

Eric Funk is the Manager of Community First Bank in Clarion PA. He has served in that position since the branch opened in Clarion in November 2010. Prior to joining Community First Bank Eric had been a Vice President of Corporate Banking at First Commonwealth Bank and was Market President for Clarion and Venango County with National City Bank prior to 2008 . Eric has a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration and several additional banking and leadership certificates.

Eric currently serves as the President of the Clarion Area School District Board of Directors and is in his 13th year of service to the district. He serves on the boards of Clarion Healthcare Systems that operates our local hospital and Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center an area Nursing Facility. Eric also serves on the Clarion County Industrial Develop Authority Board.

Eric has served with several other community groups including being Past President and board member of the Clarion Area Chamber of Business and Industry, Past President and board member of the Clarion County Economic Development Corporation, and Past President and board member of the Clarion County YMCA.

Board Vice President

Mary Louise Logue, a West Virginia University School of Journalism graduate, has worked in electronic and print media for over 40 years in the Pittsburgh, northern West Virginia and north western Pennsylvania markets.

She is employed at Venango Newspapers, Inc. (VNI) and Western PA Newspaper Company (WPNC), having served in several positions including COO, national advertising manager and website publisher. VNI and WPNC, local family-owned companies with properties in Venango and Clarion counties, publish two daily newspapers, a semi-weekly newspaper, two free publications and four electronic news sites. The print versions of the newspapers have been in publication for over 150 years.

Mrs. Logue currently serves as Board Vice Chair of Butler Health System Clarion Hospital. Additionally, she serves her community on the boards of the Clarion County Industrial Authority, Clarion County Economic Development Corporation, Clarion County Tax Appeals Board, and Clarview Nursing and Rehab Center/Country Springs Personal Care. She is a 25+ year member of the Clarion Rotary Club and has served as a board member of the Clarion University Foundation, Clarion Forest Visiting Nurses Association and Clarion County Board of Elections.

Mrs. Logue resides in Sligo, Clarion County, with her husband Dana.

Patrick KahlePatrick Kahle
Board Treasurer

Patrick Kahle is the president of Zacherl Motor Truck Sales, an International Truck Dealership in Clarion. He has worked for his family business for 35 years, taking the lead of the company in 2008 along with 2 of his siblings as owners. Pat has a BS in Communication from Clarion University, graduating in 1992 after internships and cooperative work with WDVE radio in Pittsburgh.

He has served the Clarion community as a Chamber of Business & Industry board member and Chairman of the 50th Autumn Leaf Festival. He also was a member of the Clarion University Alumni Association Board of Directors for 8 years, serving a term as the President. Pat was on the Clarion University Student Association Board of Directors for 6 years and currently serves as the President of the Immaculate Conception Cemetery Association, a position he has held since 2018. He also served 4 years as a member of the Clarion Area Little League Board of directors and was fundraising chair for 2 of those years. Pat has coached numerous baseball teams at many levels including Clarion Little League, Clarion Junior League and Clarion Area High School. He also was actively involved in coaching football with the Clarion YMCA and with the Clarion Limestone youth football team.

Pat also serves on the Occupational Advisory boards of Jeff Tech in Reynoldsville, PA and of the Clarion County Career Center in Clarion.

He has served as the chair of the Finance Committee for the Clarion Hospital Board and has been a board member for seven years.

As a play by play sports broadcaster for C-93 radio in Clarion for 18 years, Pat and his broadcast partners won an award for the Best Local Sports Broadcast in Pennsylvania in 2003.

Pat and his wife Diane live in the Curllsville Heights in Clarion County with their son Billy along with a host of forest animals.

Fred Port Fred Port
Board Secretary

Fred Port has been in the banking industry for more than 28 years, currently serving as the Vice President, Business Banking Relationship Manager with Northwest Bank in Clarion, PA. During his career, he has held a number of positions in the banking industry in the retail and commercial side of the banking world. He works with small business owners to match their financial needs with the correct lending and deposit products across a four county territory in Western Pennsylvania from his office in Clarion. Northwest is a $10 Billion community-oriented financial institution established in 1896 which operates 172 full service community banking locations.

Mr. Port currently serves as the Board Chair of the Clarion Healthcare System and Clarion Hospital (since September of 2017) and is a member of their finance committee. He has attended several national conferences with Quorum Health Resources since beginning his board service at Clarion in 2011. Additionally, he has served as the Treasurer of the for profit corporation under Clarion Healthcare, Clarion Development Corporation (CDC) since September of 1992. The CDC has operated retail pharmacies and owns/operates several medical use properties that the company leases to a variety of tenants. Mr. Port also served as Vice-Chair of the Pennsylvania Mountain Care Network from December of 2014 to October of 2018, an affiliation between Indiana, Punxsutawney and Clarion Hospitals during that period of time.

Mr. Port has been a member of the Clarion Rotary Club since December of 1992, serving on its board of directors several times, serving as President of its Foundation and serving as Club President in 2003-2004. He is a Paul Harris Fellow multiple times for donations to the Rotary International Foundation. Mr. Port is a coach and director of the Rising Stars of Clarion AAU Basketball Club since February of 2006. He has coached girls and boys teams during this time with teams from 11U to 18U. The Rising Stars teams have played in eleven states, winning many championships including the Carrier Dome Pre-Nationals and the NAYS Championships in Chicago, IL.

Mr. Port and his wife, Michelle, live on their family farm in Clarion and are the proud parents of three adult children, Taylor, Lily and Noah.

Norman K. Beals III, MD Norman K. Beals III, MD

Dr. Beals is board certified and fellow of the American Board of Family Medicine and also holds qualification in sports medicine. He graduated from St. George's University School of Medicine. After completing his clinical core rotations at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, United Kingdom, he went on to complete his Jefferson affiliate residency program in Family Medicine. He joined Butler Health System in 2014. Special interests include evolving future ambulatory care models and, along with the BHS Healthcare Team, creating extraordinary experiences for patients in the communities we serve.

Ken DeFurio Ken DeFurio
President & CEO

Ken DeFurio has been with Butler Health System for nearly 37 years. He has served as President & CEO for 16 years.

Under DeFurio’s leadership, BHS has grown into one of the most successful regional health systems in Pennsylvania, all while remaining community-based and independent.

BHS employs more than 3,000 people. It is the largest employer in Butler County and one of the largest in all of western PA. Butler Health System includes Butler Memorial Hospital, Clarion Hospital, and Butler Medical Providers, a large, multi-specialty physician network of more than 150 physicians and more than 100 advanced practice providers. BHS has 80 ambulatory locations across 8 counties.

DeFurio began his career at BHS as a respiratory therapist, providing direct care to patients. He holds a BS in Respiratory Therapy from Indiana University of PA, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. DeFurio serves on a number of boards and community organizations, including Butler County Community College and the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania.

Thomas Freenock, MD

Dr. Thomas Freenock is a board-certified physiatrist, or rehabilitation specialist, who serves as the medical director of the Rehab Center at Clarion Hospital and has a busy outpatient practice at SSJ Diagnosis & Rehab emphasizing musculoskeletal medicine, sports medicine and electro diagnostic testing.

Dr. Freenock graduated from Hahnemann University Medical School and did his Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency at Graduate Hospital affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

He is past president of the Pennsylvania Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He was also a long time member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society Board of Trustees.

Dr. Freenock has a long history in healthcare initially as an athletic trainer and physical therapist and then transitioning to Medicine where he served in the United States Navy as a General Medical Officer earning 2 Navy Commendation Medals in 2 tours of duty.

He has served patients in Clarion County for 26 years and is committed to improving the health care environment for patient’s and providers in the region.

Melinda Gatesman

Joseph P. Grunenwald, PhD Joseph P. Grunenwald, DBA

Dr. Joseph P. Grunenwald served as the 15th President of Clarion University. He brought to his new duties a long and respected record of professional service to Clarion University as a professor of marketing and department chair, interim executive dean of the Venango Campus, director of continuing education, dean of the college of business administration, and provost and academic vice president. In each of his roles, Grunenwald worked to promote academic excellence and the highest quality in university programs and services.

In July, 2010, The Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education awarded the status of President Emeritus in recognition of his career long contributions. He was only the fifth president to receive this honor in the nearly three decades of the System’s existence.

Grunenwald is a member and past national Vice President of the American Marketing Association and has served in editorial positions for the Journal of Services Marketing, W. C. Brown Publishers, and Merrill Publishing Company. He has also served as a member of the NCAA Division II President’s Council. He has served as a consultant for numerous regional businesses and non-profit organizations.

Within the State System of Higher Education, Grunenwald was a member of the Commission of Presidents of the State System and had served on State System committees addressing such issues as articulation, social equity, labor negotiations, and budget allocation. He has also served as coordinator of the PA Center for Applied Nanotechnology and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Academy of Teaching and the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Dr. Grunenwald has served as Board Member for the Team Pennsylvania Foundation, the Northwest Workforce Investment Board, and the Northwest Pennsylvania Keystone Innovation Zone.

Locally, he has served on the boards of numerous economic development and community organizations, including the Clarion County Economic Development Corporation, for which he served as president, Clarion County Chamber of Business and Industry, Clarion County Industrial Development Council, and the Clarion County Sawmill Center for the Arts.

Grunenwald holds a bachelor of engineering degree (1970) from Youngstown State University and master of business administration (1975) and doctor of business administration degrees (1981) from Kent State University.

Bruce McCleary owns and operates McCleary Business Machines located in Knox, PA. A family owned business for 49 years, it services and sells copiers, printers and document solutions.

Bruce currently serves on the Clarion Hospital Board of Directors. He has been on this board for two nine year terms. He previously served as Chairman of the Clarion Hospital Foundation Board for 28 years. He was very active in the implementation of the cancer center wing in 2003, where 2.3 million was raised.

Bruce received his education from Devry Institute in Columbus, OH.

He currently resided in Knox with his wife Marla. He has two grown children and two grandsons.

Jill Over

Jill Over was raised in Clarion County. She graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She also took additional business courses at Clarion University.

Jill has worked at Clarion Hospital for two years then at Clarion Forest VNA, Inc. for 40 years, the last 34 years as the CEO.

Jill is currently retired but serves on the Clarion Hospital Board of Directors and Finance Committee, and as a Board Member and Secretary of Clarion County Housing Authority. She also is a member-at-large of the Clarion County Republican Committee.

Jill attends Christ Lutheran Church in Oil City, Pennsylvania.

Erich Spessard has served on the Clarion Healthcare System Board of Trustees since 2018. Erich is the current First Assistant District Attorney of Clarion County. In that role, he prosecutes cases and advocates on behalf of victims and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Previously, he served as Chief Public Defender of Clarion County, and an Assistant Public Defender in Pittsburgh. In his current role, Erich is a team member of both the Drug Treatment and Behavioral Health specialty court programs in Clarion County focusing on rehabilitation and stabilization.

Erich also volunteers on numerous local non-profit community organizations including Board President of the United Way of Clarion County and Secretary of The ARC of Clarion and Venango Counties.

Erich earned a bachelor in Political Science from Clarion University of Pennsylvania (2009) and a Juris Doctor from the College of William and Mary (2012). He and his wife, Miranda, live in Clarion with their two sons.

Rodrick Stevenson, MD​Rodrick Stevenson, MD

Medical Staff President

Dr. Rodrick Stevenson is a board-certified general surgeon who serves as medical staff president at BHS Clarion Hospital. He practices general surgery BHS Surgery, Clarion performing multiple general surgical procedures and endoscopies.

Dr. Stevenson graduated from Meharry Medical College and completed his residency in general surgery at Howard University Hospital. He also completed his fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Stevenson recently finished an MBA program at the Jack Welch Management Institute of Strayer University.

BHS Clarion Hospital is where Dr. Stevenson has been practicing over the past 10 years and he has practiced surgery for over 25 years. He has served the Clarion community as a physician and has served on the Clarion County Airport Authority Board. Dr. Stevenson served as chairman of the finance committee and chairman of the patient access subcommittee of Network Operations Council. He also has special interest in serving the rural and underserved communities to help insure access to quality care.
