I've been at Clarion for many years now between clinical rotations and
residency, and being from the area it feels good to be able to provide
quality care for my hometown. We have a good culture here for residents,
we are the focus of the training here being an unopposed residency with
a high attending to resident ratio, and lots of opportunity for hands-on
learning and procedures. The residents get along well with each other,
and because it is such a small program we end up feeling like a family.
Likewise, there is a great relationship between residents and attendings
here; attending physicians are very interested in teaching and always
available for help, and I am lucky to have quite a few mentors among them.

Clarion Hospital's family medicine program has been a great fit for me
because it has provided me with a wide range of patient care experiences
so that I will be prepared for the breadth and depth of family medicine
experiences when I graduate. At Clarion Hospital you are exposed to a
wide variety of procedures and rotations including hospital medicine,
cardiology, surgery and anesthesia. Clinic, which gives you exposure to
outpatient office visits provides you with high quality practical patient
care experiences on a weekly basis where under the supervision of your
attendings you learn by ordering medications/testing for patients and
follow up in the same manner that one would do as an attending after residency.
Continuity patients at clinic as well as with nursing home and OB patients
also allows you to develop strong doctor patient relationships and learn
how to treat patient's over months to years.
Clarion Hospital's smaller sized program allows you to develop close working
relationships with attendings and other residents which I find more appealing
than big academic programs where you are might not be familiar with a
patient's particular specialist on a given day. However, for patient's
that do need highly specialized care, patient's can easily be sent to
hospitals or specialists in Pittsburgh (which is only about an hour and
a half away from Clarion). Living in Clarion is also very convenient for
me as Clarion is great for quality of life (less traffic and more nature)
but also only about an hour and a half to the big city life of Pittsburgh
(as well as only about two hours from Cleveland and six hours from Northeast
Corridor cities such as New York City or Philadelphia).

When applying to residency programs, it was very important to me to seek
a program in the tristate area that is family friendly. After finishing
my first year of residency training, I am thrilled to say that the Clarion
Hospital FM Residency Program is everything and more than what I could
have hoped for in a program. The work-life balance is truly ideal. I have
been fortunate enough to have had ample time outside of work to devote
to my family and personal commitments. It has been very easy and convenient
for me to travel to and from NJ and for my spouse to vice versa relocate
to Clarion. All of our Attending Physicians are so understanding, engaged
with the residents and students, and willing to offer guidance and support
of any capacity.
Here at Clarion, we have a small, close-knit community that includes FM
residents, TY residents, attendings, medical students, and other hospital
staff. We have all become very close in both our personal and professional
lives and we continue to learn and grow together, day by day. I am particularly
interested in Inpatient Medicine, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover
upon beginning my PGY-1 year that the Clarion FM Residency Program offers
extensive Inpatient Internal Medicine training experience. Furthermore,
our affiliations with larger institutions like Butler Memorial Hospital
and UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh provide excellent supplemental
learning opportunities for residents to enhance and expand their training.
Overall, I am tremendously happy and proud to be pursuing my residency
training at Clarion Hospital, and I look forward to the years to come!

I had never heard of Clarion before I applied for residency here. What
I was able to glean from the website and scouring Facebook posts gave
me the image of a small community hospital with close connections to patients
and their families. I have found this to be entirely true, but it is just
the tip of the iceberg for all that I have come to see of Clarion Hospital,
and I couldn't be happier.
My background has taken me through wildly different environments, but has
always been grounded in communities. From working with the Deaf and refugee
communities in San Diego, to learning how to navigate patients through
the framework of a busy London hospital, to diabetes outreach in rural
Germany, to research in North Carolina. Now I'm here, and it is both wholly
unique from each of those areas, but the sense of community makes sure
that I do not feel like a cuckoo in an unfamiliar nest.
Every day, I am grateful for the name popping up on a list of available
programs. From working 1:1 with attendings who are eager to teach, to
the flexibility to make this program my own, it is wonderful. It is customizable
with plenty of elective time, flexible and adaptive to emergencies, and
nurturing with the care and support of our co-residents and faculty members.
Our teams of nurses and admin get to know us, and will help us shape our
program. From calling us if there is a procedure they know we would be
interested in, to supporting us as we take on passion projects, they show
they care about our personal and professional growth. Dr. Kunselman, our
program director, has us reach out directly to her with absolutely anything.
