BHS Announces Medical Residency Training Program; Michael Fiorina, DO, Named Vice President Medical Education

Butler Health System will develop a medical residency program at Butler Memorial Hospital. Michael Fiorina, DO, has been named Vice President of Medical Education. Dr. Fiorina will lead the medical residency program creation and implementation for BHS.

It is anticipated that BHS will complete required regulatory and accreditation requirements that will allow it to accept its first class of residents in July 2023.

Dr. Fiorina said, “This is an amazing chance to bring physicians into this community and build onto an already excellent health care system. We have the opportunity to create a program that will sustain the well-being of this community for generations to come. I am humbled and incredibly excited for the future.”

“I have long felt that the presence of medical education, physician training, and an educational milieu in general can do nothing but make BHS a better organization”, said Ken DeFurio, BHS President & CEO, “The challenge and rigor of physician training requires the entire staff to perform at the highest level of excellence. Dr. Fiorina will do an outstanding job leading this endeavor”.

In addition to formal medical education and training, Dr. Fiorina will assure that BMH resident physicians reach out into the community, educating people about the ways and means to keep themselves healthy. Dr. Fiorina looks forward to instilling a proper sense of community responsibility, training potentially hundreds of physicians to be intelligent, kind and compassionate stewards of the community’s health. Butler Memorial Hospital will become a teaching hospital for the first time in its 125 year history. Clarion Hospital, a BHS organization, has a residency program in Family Medicine.
