President & CEO
Ken DeFurio began his career in healthcare as a respiratory therapist.
His first job out of college, after earning a Bachelor of Science degree
in respiratory therapy, was at Butler Memorial Hospital. DeFurio then
accepted his first management position at the University of Maryland Medical
System in Baltimore, MD. In 1989, DeFurio returned to Butler Health System.
He was increasingly responsible for the management of several departments,
while earning an MBA at the University of Pittsburgh. Moving through the
ranks at the Butler Health System, DeFurio held the titles of Department
Director, Vice President of Outpatient Services, Chief Operations Officer,
and for nearly 10 years, President & CEO.
Under DeFurio’s leadership, Butler Health System has led the region
as an independent, community-based health system. As one of the largest
employers in Butler County, BHS is comprised of Butler Memorial Hospital
and more than 70 ambulatory locations.
Chief Operating Officer
Jason comes to Butler Health System with a wealth of experience, most recently
serving as President & COO of Centegra Health System in the northern
Chicago/southern Wisconsin market. His previous work experience also includes
administrative roles, including the COO position at University Hospital/SUNY
Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY.
He holds a Bachelor of Science in business from Geneva College, and a master's
degree from LeMoyne College in Syracuse. In addition to having responsibility
for a number of clinical and support areas at BHS, he has a strong focus
on business development and the ongoing growth and performance of the
BHS physician network.
A. Thomas McGill, MD
Vice President Quality and Safety, Chief Medical Informatics Officer
Dr. McGill joined the Butler Health System Medical staff in 1993 as an
Infectious Disease practitioner. He received his medical degree from the
University of Massachusetts Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal
Medicine and Infectious Disease. He and his wife Rita have two daughters.
David Rottinghaus, MD
Vice President Acute Care, Assistant Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Rottinghaus graduated from Medical College of Ohio and completed his
emergency medicine residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh,
PA in 2001. He worked as an attending physician in emergency medicine
at AGH until 2010.
Dr. Rottinghaus joined Butler Emergency Physicians Associates as staff
physician in the ED at Butler Memorial Hospital in 2010 and became Medical
Director of the Emergency Department at Butler Memorial Hospital in 2011.
He later joined the Administrative Team at Butler Health System in 2014
as Executive Director, Emergency Services, and now serves as Assistant
Chief Medical Officer.
Norman K. Beals III, MD
Vice President Ambulatory Care, Chief Innovation Officer
Dr. Beals is Board certified and Fellow of the American Board of Family
Medicine and also holds qualification in Sports Medicine. He graduated
from St. George's University School of Medicine. After completing
his clinical core rotations at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, United
Kingdom, he went on to complete his Jefferson affiliate Residency program
in Family Medicine. He joined Butler Health System in 2014. Special interests
include evolving future ambulatory care models and, along with the BHS
Health Care Team, creating extraordinary experiences for patients in the
communities we serve.
Elliot Smith, MD
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Smith obtained his medical degree from Hahnemann University School
of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1992. He completed residency training at
Allegheny General Hospital in 1995, and is Board Certified by the American
Board of Internal Medicine. He has practiced in Evans City, PA for over
20 years. He joined the medical staff of BMH in 2013 and has served as
the chief medical officer of the Butler Health System Provider Hospital
Organization since its inception in 2015.
Karen Allen, RN
Vice President Patient Services, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Experience Officer
Karen came to Butler Health System from UPMC Shadyside in 2004 and has
over 26 years of experience in healthcare. She holds an associate degree
in nursing and Bachelor of Science in education from the University of
Pittsburgh and is working on a master’s in Healthcare Administration,
also from the University of Pittsburgh. Karen has published articles in
AORN, Surgical Services Management and Today’s OR Nurse.
Thomas A. Genevro
Vice President Support Services, Chief Human Resources Officer
Tom came to Butler Health System in 2008 and has over 15 years of experience
in healthcare. He earned a Bachelor of Science in labor and industrial
relations from Penn State University and a master’s degree in business
administration from Robert Morris University. He is certified as a Senior
Professional in Human Resources from the HR Certification Institute.
Paula L. Hooper, Esquire
Vice President & Chief Legal Officer
Paula Hooper came to Butler Health System from West Penn Allegheny Health
System in 2007 and has over 15 years of experience in healthcare law.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Duquesne University.
She earned her Juris Doctorate from Duquesne University School of Law.
Roger W. Lutz
Chief Information Officer
Roger came to Butler Health System in 2009 and has over 20 years of experience
in information technology and data communications. He earned a Bachelor
of Science in information sciences from Robert Morris University and a
master’s degree in Business Administration from Indiana University
of Pennsylvania. Roger’s passion is cybersecurity and he serves
on the Healthcare and Public Health sector steering committee for the
FBI’s Pittsburgh InfraGard partnership. Roger is HCISPP certified
and in his spare time teaches the Healthcare Ethics, Law, Privacy and
Information Assurance course as part of an M.Sc. Healthcare Informatics
program at Slippery Rock University.
