Ken DeFurio
President & CEO
Ken DeFurio has been with Butler Health System for nearly 35 years. He
has served as President & CEO for 14 years.
Under DeFurio’s leadership, BHS has grown into one of the most successful
regional health systems in Pennsylvania, all while remaining community-based
and independent.
BHS employs more than 3000 people. It is the largest employer in Butler
County and one of the largest in all of western PA. Butler Health System
includes Butler Memorial Hospital, Clarion Hospital, and Butler Medical
Providers, a large, multi-specialty physician network of more than 150
physicians and more than 100 advanced practice providers. BHS has 80 ambulatory
locations across 8 counties.
DeFurio began his career at BHS as a respiratory therapist, providing direct
care to patients. He holds a BS in Respiratory Therapy from Indiana University
of PA, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of
Pittsburgh. DeFurio serves on a number of boards and community organizations,
including Butler County Community College and the Hospital and Healthsystem
Association of Pennsylvania.
Steven Davis, MBA, FACHE
President & CEO
Steven Davis is an accomplished health care executive with extensive experience
in hospital and health care operations, strategic planning and new business
development. Steven earned his Bachelor of Science, Health Policy and
Administration and went on to receive his Master of Business Administration
from Penn State University.
He is Board Certified in Health care Administration by the American College
of Health care Executives. In addition to serving as President of Clarion
Hospital, Steven is also responsible for leading overall integration efforts
for Butler Health System, ensuring strategic and cultural alignment leading
to a consistent patient experience. Before coming to Clarion, Steven most
recently served as the CEO at Lock Haven Hospital. He brings 21 years
of combined experience in healthcare leadership to our community. A native
Pennsylvanian, Steven is originally from Danville, PA. In his spare time,
Steven enjoys golf, mountain biking and spending time with family.
Eric Huss
Chief Financial Officer
Eric Huss has thirty-five years of extensive knowledge and experience in
healthcare. He started his career at Ernst & Young where he earned
his CPA in public accounting. He then went on from there and joined UPMC
where he held various financial management positions. After gaining much
experience, Eric joined Gateway Health where he held the position of CFO
for over a decade. Prior to joining BHS he was serving as the Executive
Vice President Finance and Administration, CFO at Health Partners Plans
in Philadelphia, PA.
Eric earned a Bachelors of Science in Accounting from West Virginia University.
He has also held various professional affiliation positions, most notably,
Former President of the Western PA Chapter of Healthcare Financial Management
Association (HFMA) and Treasurer/Board Member of The Watson Institute.
Eric has worked within the healthcare industry for over a decade, and
we are excited to have him join our BHS family.
David Rottinghaus, MD
Chief Medical Officer, Vice President of Medical Affairs
Dr. Rottinghaus graduated from Medical College of Ohio and completed his
emergency medicine residency at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh,
PA in 2001. He worked as an attending physician in emergency medicine
at AGH until 2010.
Dr. Rottinghaus joined Butler Emergency Physicians Associates as staff
physician in the ED at Butler Memorial Hospital in 2010 and became Medical
Director of the Emergency Department at Butler Memorial Hospital in 2011.
He later joined the Administrative Team at Butler Health System in 2014
as Executive Director, Emergency Services and now serves in his current
role as Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs.
Norman K. Beals III, MD
Chief Innovation Officer, Vice President Ambulatory Care
Dr. Beals is Board certified and Fellow of the American Board of Family
Medicine and also holds qualification in Sports Medicine. He graduated
from St. George's University School of Medicine. After completing
his clinical core rotations at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, United
Kingdom, he went on to complete his Jefferson affiliate Residency program
in Family Medicine. He joined Butler Health System in 2014. Special interests
include evolving future ambulatory care models and, along with the BHS
Health Care Team, creating extraordinary experiences for patients in the
communities we serve.
Karen Allen, RN
Chief Nursing Officer, Vice President Patient Services
Karen came to Butler Health System from UPMC Shadyside in 2004 and has
over 26 years of experience in healthcare. She holds an associate degree
in nursing and Bachelor of Science in education from the University of
Pittsburgh and is working on a master’s in Healthcare Administration,
also from the University of Pittsburgh. Karen has published articles in
AORN, Surgical Services Management and Today’s OR Nurse.
Thomas A. Genevro
Senior Vice President of Operations
Tom joined Butler Health System in 2008 and has over 25 years of experience
in healthcare. He earned a Bachelor of Science in labor and industrial
relations from Penn State University and a master’s degree in business
administration from Robert Morris University.
Roger W. Lutz
Chief Information Officer
Roger came to Butler Health System in 2009 and has over 20 years of experience
in information technology and data communications. He earned a Bachelor
of Science in Information Science from Robert Morris University and a
Master’s degree in Business Administration from Indiana University
of Pennsylvania. Roger’s passion is cybersecurity and he serves
on the Healthcare and Public Health sector steering committee for the
FBI’s Pittsburgh InfraGard partnership. Roger holds both CHCIO and
HCISPP certifications and in his spare time teaches the Healthcare Ethics,
Law, Privacy and Information Assurance course as part of an M.Sc. Healthcare
Informatics program at Slippery Rock University.
Hillary Harlan, BSRN, JD, CHC
Chief Compliance Officer & VP Professional Services
Hillary has a unique clinical and legal background. Hillary has expertise
in the areas of corporate compliance, healthcare fraud and regulatory
issues, litigation support, and risk assessment, among others. Most recently,
Hillary has been a Senior Managing Director with GlassRatner, a multi-specialty
financial advisory firm. In addition to BHS, Hillary has previous experience
at McKesson, MED3000, and Preferred Care Partners Management Group. She
also has experience as a cardiac intensive care RN.
Hillary will provide oversight of BHS’s Corporate Compliance Program
as well as BHS’s Professional Services (HR, Risk Management, Governance,
and Legal Services).
Hillary holds a BA English from SMU, a BS Nursing from Texas Tech, and
a Juris Doctor Law degree from Texas Tech.
Kathy J. Selvaggi, MS, MD, FAAHPM
Chief Community Health Officer
Dr. Selvaggi graduated from the Pennsylvania State University College of
Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine residency and Hematology/Oncology
fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh.
Selvaggi practiced Oncology in western PA for many years before completing
a palliative care fellowship at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston
MA. She was the Director of the inpatient palliative care unit at Brigham
and Woman’s hospital in Boston until October 2015 when she joined
the Butler health System to develop and direct the BHS palliative care program.
Selvaggi joined the administrative team at BHS in January 2021 to serve
as Chief Community Health Officer. Her many responsibilities will include
addressing the social determinants of health and collaborating with community
leaders and insurers to improve the health of communities served by BHS.
