Interventional Radiology

Options for Minimally Invasive Surgery with Interventional Radiologists

Independence Health System offers minimally invasive procedures as an alternative to traditional surgery. Interventional radiology is an innovative medical specialty that uses advanced imaging techniques to guide small instruments through blood vessels and other pathways to diagnose and treat diseases at the source.

Interventional Radiology Procedures

Independence Health System is committed to patient-centered care. Our team collaborates with referring physicians to provide a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to each patient's unique needs and circumstances. Depending on your condition and/or symptoms you’re presenting, your referring physician may recommend any of the following interventional radiology procedures performed at Independence Health System:

  • Aneurysm Coiling: A procedure performed to block blood flow into an aneurysm (a weakened area in the wall of an artery).
  • Angiography: A diagnostic procedure that uses c-rays to view your blood vessels.
  • Central Venous Access: A method of access to the major veins, often used to administer medication or fluids, obtain blood tests, and directly measure blood pressure.
  • Kyphoplasty and Vertebroplasty: Minimally invasive treatments for vertebral compression fractures that restore the lost vertebral body height and alleviate pain.
  • Pain Injections: Shots given to specific areas of the body to relieve pain.
  • Percutaneous Feeding Tubes: Tubes inserted through the skin into the stomach to provide nutrition when oral intake is not adequate.
  • RFA (Radio Frequency Ablation): A procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to destroy abnormal heart tissue or other tissues causing problems.
  • Stents and Angioplasties: Medical procedures that involve the insertion of a small tube to open up blocked or narrowed blood vessels, improving blood flow.
  • TIPS (Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystemic Shunt): A procedure that creates a pathway between the portal vein and the hepatic vein to prevent bleeding and reduce high blood pressure in the liver.
  • Uterine Fibroid Embolization: A minimally invasive treatment for fibroid tumors in the uterus where small particles are injected to block the blood supply, thereby causing them to shrink.
  • Vein Thrombolysis: A treatment to dissolve dangerous clots in blood vessels to improve blood flow and prevent damage to tissues and organs.
  • Venous Ablation: A procedure used to treat chronic venous insufficiency by closing off faulty veins so that blood may be rerouted through healthy veins.
