Classes Offered at the Diabetes Management Center

A certified team of diabetes educators, including registered nurses and dietitians and doctors, provide advice, explain techniques, and offer other valuable information on managing type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Registration is required for most sessions, so please call the Diabetes Management Center at 724-284-4374 for dates and times.

A family member, partner, or spouse is encouraged to attend any classes with the patient.

Diabetes Self-Management Class

Recognized by the American Diabetes Association, this class is taught by five instructors with relevant backgrounds and provides the foundation for diabetes self-management. Sessions are offered throughout the year, and each consists of four two-and-a-half hour classes.

Counting Carbohydrates

A registered dietitian will teach patients to identify foods containing carbohydrates and to monitor carbohydrates for blood glucose control.

Gestational Diabetes Nutrition and Self-Management Class

Instructors with relevant backgrounds will teach women who are pregnant and diagnosed with gestational diabetes and their support person about meal choices and how to monitor blood glucose using a glucometer.

Nutrition Therapy

A registered dietitian will discuss basic nutrition information and develop a meal plan specific to each patient.

Basic Insulin Pump Information Night

Nurse diabetes educators will present information on insulin pumps and basic insulin pumping skills during this free program.

Diabetes Education Series (Diabetes Support Group)

Doctors and other healthcare professionals offer sound medical advice during this free support session, which is appropriate for individuals with diabetes and those interested in the disease.

Insulin Pump Education Series (Insulin Pump Support Group)

Similar to the Diabetes Education Series, healthcare professionals as well as authors and athletes with diabetes will discuss life with an insulin pump during this free session.

Glucometer Instruction

Monitoring and meter techniques and other glucometer-related information will be presented.

Insulin Injection Instruction

For patients beginning insulin therapy, this class will discuss such topics as insulin injection technique, types of insulin, and hypoglycemia.
