BMH Cardiovascular Surgery Program Named best in State, Among Top 5% in Nation

BMH’s Heart & Vascular Center has been named the top Cardiovascular Surgery Program in the State of Pennsylvania and simultaneously among the top 5% in the nation.

The Heart & Vascular Center received the top rating of all cardiovascular surgery programs in the state of Pennsylvania by HealthGrades, the nation’s leading healthcare quality assessment company.

While BMH has received 5 star ratings in cardiac bypass surgery for several years by HealthGrades, this is the first time it has received the “Best in the State” designation.

The HealthGrades ratings measure whether patient outcomes for each of more than two dozen procedures and diagnoses are better than expected (five-star rating), as expected (three-star rating) or worse than expected (one-star rating).  Earning a 5-Star designation indicates that a hospital has scored in the Top 15% or better in the nation for clinical quality. BMH’s heart program received the highest possible ratings in coronary bypass surgery and valve replacement surgery and is the top 5% in the nation.

“In the Pittsburgh community, Butler has generally stood out notably in terms of delivering quality care for its patients,” says Scott Shaprio, senior vice president of corporate communications for HealthGrades.  “But now it stands out clearly across the entire state. The high quality ratings earned by Butler Memorial Hospital reflect a significant level of excellence.”
