Area Surgeon Offering Lap Band Surgery (BUTLER, PA)—Certified as a Lap Band surgeon since 2006, Dr. David Melniczek is now offering bariatric surgery as part of Butler Health System’s surgical program.
Informational seminars and support groups are being held the last Thursday of every month and can be scheduled by calling 724-431-4190.
The FDA recently expanded approval of Lap Band patients to those with a BMI (Body Mass Index) between 30 and 35 with a weight-related medical condition such as sleep apnea, diabetes or high blood pressure. Patients must have also been unsuccessful by traditional weight loss methods such as diet and exercise. Patients with a BMI greater than 35 do not need to have any weight related medical conditions.
Certified by the American Board of Surgeons and licensed to practice in Pennsylvania, Dr. Melniczek previously practiced in both Denver and San Diego. He received his bachelor’s degree from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa., and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. After finishing his medical degree, Dr. Melniczek completed an internship in surgery at Exempla St. Joseph Hospital in Denver. He served as chief surgical resident at Lehigh Valley Hospital and received an additional year of training in bariatric surgery in San Diego, CA and Denver, CO. He served as chief surgical resident at Lehigh Valley Hospital.
