BMH Offers National Program for Women Fighting Cancer

July 6 , 2006 - (BUTLER, PA) - Butler Memorial Hospital (BMH) is once again bringing the national Look Good...Feel Better program to area residents. A session for women undergoing cancer treatment will be held from 10 to 12 noon on Monday, July 17 at the hospital.

Look Good...Feel Better is a free national program designed to help improve the self-image and self-esteem of women experiencing appearance-related side affects from cancer treatment. Founded in 1989, Look Good... Feel Better is a partnership of the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association Foundation; the American Cancer Society and the National Cosmetology Association. These three partners support the program through funding, training of volunteers and free educational materials and cosmetics.

A one-time support service, Look Good...Feel Better offers hands on, self-help instruction and education by volunteer cosmetologists.

In this Look Good...Feel Better session, volunteer cosmetologists from the Butler area will teach women how to enhance their appearance using make-up techniques. This group session is free to women currently undergoing radiation or chemotherapy for cancer. Participants will learn how to make themselves over using complimentary cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry.

Women also learn how to disguise hair loss using wigs, turbans, scarves and various accessories. Nail care “do’s and don’ts” during cancer treatment are also discussed.

“BMH decided to participate in this campaign because it is a wonderful program to help women undergoing cancer treatment to improve their self-image and self-esteem,” says Sharon Feehan, a practice specialist at BMH.  “We are committed to women’s health care and meeting women’s needs and this program will give women with cancer the courage to continue their daily lifestyle.”

The July 17 session is free but registration is required. Call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345.
