BMH, Pediatricians Offer New Class for Parents Raising TeensSeptember 13, 2004 - (BUTLER, PA) –In response to continued feedback from parents, Butler Memorial Hospital and Next Generation Pediatrics in Butler have created a new education class for parents raising pre-teens and teenagers.
The class, titled, “Raising Kids: What’s Sex Got to Do With It?” is a two-part series. The first session is for parents only and then, a week later, parents are asked to return with their children.
“We have been offering the 'It’s a Girl Thing' and 'It’s Guy Thing' programs for parents and their 9- to 12-year-old sons and daughters for several years,” says Kathy West, an instructor with the Education Department at BMH, who will teach the class along with Next Generation pediatricians Dr. Robert Poth and Dr. James Mortimer.
The pre-adolescent classes offer mothers and daughters or fathers and sons a chance to discuss changes that occur during puberty and enhance communication skills. These classes have been well attended for the past several years at BMH.
“During these courses we repeatedly had requests from parents to do a more candid discussion on sex and what’s happening in the real world. We have put together a program that will provide parents with information and hopefully open the lines of communication between parents and their teenagers,” says West. “Our goal is to help adolescents make wise choices when faced with the increased challenges that they may encounter.”
Topics of discussion will include teen psychological development, sexual experimentation, peer pressure, sexually transmitted diseases, and communication issues.
“BMH and Next Generation Pediatrics share a sincere commitment to the families of our community and this class gives us the chance to address parents concerns about sexual behavior and to learn how they and their teenagers can face the challenges in today’s society,” said Dr. Robert Poth.
Registration is required, and the class fee is $20, due one week before the first class session. If parents return the second week with their teenager, the registration fee will be refunded.
The first series of this class will begin on Thursday, Sept. 30, with the second session on Thursday, Oct. 7. The session will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. both evenings in the Dimmick Educational Center. Payment and registration is due by Sept. 23 and seating is limited.
Reservations can be made by calling Kathy West in BMH’s Education Department at 724-284-4843.
