BMH Receives Distinguished Hospital Award for Excellence in Patient Safety

October 18, 2004 - (BUTLER, PA) – BMH has been recognized for excellence in patient safety and is one of only 88 U.S. hospitals to receive the award. The honor places BMH in the top 2% in the nation for patient pafety.

HealthGrades, Inc., the nation’s leading source for healthcare quality information, analyzed more than 4,700 hospitals nationwide for its 2004 Patient Safety ratings, objectively assessing their safe outcomes. The methodology was developed to perform a roll-up of 13 of the 20 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) patient safety indicators and divided the hospitals into two peer groups: Teaching and Non-Teaching.

Overall, the best hospitals (top 7.5% of all hospitals studied) had five fewer deaths per 1,000 hospitalizations compared to the bottom 10th percentile of hospitals. This significant mortality difference is attributable to fewer overall patient safety incident rates at the best performing hospitals.

“Approximately 1.14 million total patient safety incidents directly contributed to 263,864 deaths among the 37 million hospitalizations in the Medicare population during 2000 through 2002,” explained Sarah Loughran, HealthGrades Executive Vice President. “Given the serious epidemic and further economic burden on our already strained healthcare system, consumers and purchasers must be armed with information that allows them to make quality-oriented healthcare choices when choosing a hospital.”

“The studied indicators accounted for $8.54 billion in excess inpatient cost to our Medicare system over 3 years, or roughly $2.85 billion annually,” added Loughran. “It is very important in this region to be aware of this information and the safe outcomes at Butler Memorial Hospital."

“We are proud to be a recipient of this award,” said Joe Stewart, president and CEO of Butler Memorial Hospital. “Patient safety is extremely important to not only our staff but our community. It is an honor for us to be recognized by HealthGrades for the safe care our patients receive.”

The HealthGrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety™ outcomes for the 88 hospital recipients along with the entire Patient Safety methodology are published, free of charge, on the HealthGrades web site, www.healthgrades.com.
