The 2004 Heart Gala raised funds for heart and stroke medical research as well as public and professional education programs. Research funded by the American Heart Association has yielded important discoveries such as CPR, life-extending drugs, pacemakers, bypass surgery, and surgical techniques to repair heart defects.
“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in America. However, many people believe that it is a man’s disease. That is not the case, as more than 500,000 American women die of heart disease each year,” said event co-chairperson Diane Davliakos. “We need to educate our mothers, our daughters, our sisters and all of the women in our lives on how to live longer and stronger by preventing heart disease before it begins.”
The Butler, Marshall and Warrendale division of the American Heart Association was formed in 2001 to better serve the local communities in the fight against heart disease and stroke. Since its inception, the Butler, Marshall and Warrendale division of the American Heart Association has successfully held three Tri-County American Heart Walks and two Heart Gala fund-raising events. The American Heart Association was founded in 1924 and has helped protect people of all ages and ethnicities from heart disease and stroke. These diseases, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers, claim more than 930,000 American lives a year. The association invested more than $348 million in fiscal year 2002-03 for research, professional and public education, and advocacy so people across America can live stronger, longer lives.
