| The Butler Road Race began in 1976, and is the oldest
annual race in western Pennsylvania. From 1976 to 1992, the race
was affiliated with either the Butler Area Chamber of Commerce or Butler
County Family YMCA.
In 1993, a separate nonprofit corporation was established, and the
cross country support program developed. The major area of support
is with academic scholarships.
A board of directors, all volunteers, govern the corporation.
There are no paid staff members.
A certain criteria must be met for the student athlete to apply.
The board of directors reviews all applications to vote for scholarship
recipients. The number of scholarships and monies to be rewarded is determined by
the net proceeds of the race. Scholarships are paid
directly to the institution of higher education.
Over four hundred scholarships have been awarded to recipients
from the past graduating classes totaling over $230,000.00. The scholarship program is accomplishing its goal
of encouraging more kids to participate in a demanding sport, as well as
to excel in academics. The combined grade point average of the
scholarships winners is an impressive 3.78 on a 4.00 basis.
