                                   HISTORY
The Butler Road Race began in 1976, and is the oldest annual race in Western Pennsylvania.  From 1976 to 1992, the race was affiliated with either the Butler Area Chamber of Commerce or Butler County Family YMCA.

In 1993, a separate nonprofit corporation was established, with "Scholarships For Kids" program providing academic scholarships.

A board of directors, all volunteers, govern the corporation.  There are no paid staff members.

A certain criteria must be met for the student athleteto apply.  The board of directors reviews all applications to vote for scholarship recipients.  Amount awarded is determined by net race profits.  Scholarships are paid directly to the institution of higher education.

537 scholarships have been awarded to recipients from the past 17 graduating classes.  Total amount awarded has been $281,500.00.  The scholarship program is accomplishing its goal of encouraging more kids to participate in a demanding sport, as well as to excel in academics.  The combined grade point average of the scholarships winners is an impressive 3.78 on a 4.00 basis.
